The items you will need:

  • An 8 foot long 4×4 Wolmanized post.
  • One or two cedar slats depending on how many are damaged as a result of the fence falling. They are 6 feet tall but do come in a couple widths so, make sure to measure yours. They can be ripped (sawn lengthwise) to fit also.
  • One 8 inch diameter Quick-Tube form.
  • Two bags of pre-mixed concrete. (one bag might not be quite enough. If you’re doing two posts, three bags should be sufficient)
  • Galvanized Nails approximately 8 nails of each size listed. You’ll probably have to buy in boxes. (This is assuming there are one post down and two fence segments down).
  • 6 penny (size designation) to nail cedar slats to the crossmembers.
  • 8 penny to toenail the fence crossmembers to the side of the 4×4 post.
  • 16 penny to nail the crossmembers (2x4s) to the top of the 4×4 posts.

The items that, hopefully, you already have:

  • A claw hammer. Finish hammer is universal. (A Nail Bar is also handy)
  • A standard round ended shovel. (Can get as cheap as $7)
  • A Post hole digger (if available. Borrow from a friend. Can be done without)
  • A string. Preferably nylon. And a couple small nails. (The 6 penny work well)
  • A level. To level the post North-South and East-West.
  • A hand saw or, preferably a circular saw to cut the 4×4 post. (A hand saw is better for cutting the cement form (Quick-Tube)).
  • A metal tape measure.
  • A Combination Square or other devise to mark the 4×4 post for cutting.
  • A pencil to mark the 4×4 post and the Cement Form.

Notes:

If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, either know where it is running or, alternatively, dig carefully at first so as not to damage the line that might be running thru the ground near the post.
Keep adjusting the hole until the form is at the correct height for how tall you cut it.
If the post that broke is holding the gate hinge or the gate latch, you will need some kind of wrench. Crescent wrench is not very handy but it is adjustable. Otherwise pick from a set of wrenches or socket set. It will be around 1/2 inch or 13 to 14 centimeters.
If the post is in an area with grass, cut the sod chunks out and set them aside to fill in with when the dirt is being replaced around the form to fill up the rest of the hole.
